Exploring the Shadows

Why do horror movies captivate so many? What draws us to the thrill of a scare? And why are we often fascinated by characters who embody villainy? These questions tap into a deeper inquiry about the human experience.
Debbie Ford, in her influential book “The Dark Side of the Light Chasers,” delves into the concept of embracing our inner darkness. According to Ford, each person harbors shadows within them, aspects often hidden from the conscious self.
Years ago, a seasoned farmer from Wilton, Ontario, shared an intriguing thought: perhaps there’s “a bit of the devil” in each of us. This idea suggests that exploring our darker inclinations isn’t just about indulgence—it’s a necessary journey to understand our complete selves in this world.
Consider the character of the Joker, Batman’s notorious nemesis. Actors who have portrayed him have brought to life a complex, twisted, and strangely captivating character. Despite his dark actions, there’s something about the Joker that keeps audiences enthralled—yet, importantly, only within the fictional realm.
What, then, defines our ‘dark side’? Are we born with it, or is it shaped through life’s experiences? Reflect on moments when you’ve thought or acted in ways that surprised even yourself. Examine the often unsettling narratives portrayed in the media and ask yourself, “How can I contribute to a brighter world?”
As a teenager, I was an avid fan of horror, regularly reading Fangoria magazine, which revealed the behind-the-scenes magic of horror filmmaking. This exposure demystified the genre for me, teaching me that the fear elicited was a crafted experience, a harmless adrenaline rush. However, as I’ve grown, my tolerance for graphic content has waned, replaced by an acute awareness of real-world violence and its true horrors.
Yet, there’s a part of me that still anticipates that next thrilling scare, a reminder of my own vulnerabilities and the excitement of confronting them—safely, of course.
And one last piece of advice—think twice before you venture into the basement.
